Hackerspace Architect: Finials
Whilst in the car, stuck in traffic, I noticed that one of the telegraph poles near where I was had a finial on the top. The thought that struck me at the time was “When did we stop putting finials on top of telegraph poles?” then my next thought was, “why do we care so little about the things we put up that we no longer decorate them?” As it turns out there is a bit of a story to this. When telegraph poles first appeared in Victorian Britain, there was push back. They were making the streets ugly. Change feels ugly.
I don’t have a broad point to make, only a lament that we’ve lost the confidence to make our infrastructure as fancy as the Victorian’s did and that we (as humans) generally hate change.
