I've got Maker's Block #makevember no.4
We have a romantic idea that creatives get block. The idea started with writers block. Percy Shelley popularised* the term, where a poor creative is just so ill fed with ideas and stimulation that they can no longer write.
But many writers don’t believe in writers block. Here is what Terry Pratchett had to say about it.
“There's no such thing as writer's block. That was invented by people in California who couldn't write.”*
I am not sure what Pratchett had against Californians. Micheal Crichton supposedly also had little time for the idea of writers block*. He’d sit down to write at a certain time of the day and write anything that came out. I’ve heard other methods, like get yourself angry about something and start writing about it, the fingers are moving the brain is working.. you are writing.
We don’t get bus drivers block or plumbers block. We do get times where we are unimpressed by our work or that we need to not do it for a short while or we need to do it differently or in a different way or drive a different bus on a different route. Sure we get tongue tired and something don’t know just the right thing to say, but we don’t get talkers block. My spirit animal Seth Godin has a couple of things to say about that here in this blog post & in his excellent podcast Akimbo
So I don’t think there is makers block either. There is I just don’t know what to make that I’m confident to share or that is meaningful in the context of how I think of making and #makevember. I’ve been been having recent thoughts along the same line. There is this one project I want to do and I want to do it well and I’m afraid of doing it and messing it up. But it’s totally what I should do, I should find a way to break it down so I have a small thing I can do for a #makevember that will get me started. Then I should do it again if it’s not right. No one said you can’t do the same #makevember more than once!
